Some Movement

There has been some movement in the public case against George Zimmerman. Crump (the lawyer for the Martin family) admits Trayvon may have thrown the first punch.

Crump said it was not clear that Martin threw the first punch but, argued that even if he did, Zimmerman’s actions launched the entire sequence of events. “Trayvon Martin had every right to stand his ground,” Crump said. “We believe that Trayvon went to his grave not knowing who this strange man was that was approaching and confronting him.”

There are also indications (I have nothing definite at this point) that Trayvon’s last suspension was for punching a bus driver. Ten day suspensions are very serious. And one of the things you can get it for is assaulting an auxiliary of the school system. Like a bus driver.

On the last point I think the time line of the suspensions as relayed by the Martin family may be incorrect. According to them:

1. First suspension – no reason
2. Second suspension – grafitti and jewelery of an unknown origin
3. Third suspension – pot pipe and empty baggie with residue

My contention:

1. First suspension – grafitti and jewelery of an unknown origin
2. Second suspension – pot pipe and empty baggie with residue
3. Third suspension – assaulting a bus driver

The records were sealed by the Martins. I do not know if Zim’s defense council can get hold of them. There is a hearing scheduled for later today. We shall see.

Update: 20 April 2012 1409z

Here is a picture of George Zimmerman taken a few minutes after Trayvon Martin was shot. It shows wounds and blood. Just in case you are squeamish or are interested in the facts of the case.

Throwing a sucker punch is not “standing your ground”. It is quite possible that both were acting in unwarranted paranoid ways that night. Trayvon however, seems to be the one who took things beyond paranoid imagination and into the realm of real physical violence. It is also very possible Trayvon really was “up to no good”. The taped calls support Zimmerman’s version of events. The un-taped call by Trayvon to his girlfriend does not contradict that account. It does however portray a frightened teenager acting brave.
