Climate change skepticism leads to blog crackdown by “Justice” Department

Glenn linked this post earlier, and my concern was aroused.

Much of the discussion of the above event has mentioned the formal notice sent to WordPress by the US Justice Department. That notice asked WordPress to freeze records associated with three blogs hosted on its US-based servers. Those blogs were:

• http://tallbloke.wordpress.com (written by Tallbloke, who is a UK resident)
• http://noconsensus.wordpress.com (aka the Air Vent written by Jeff Id who lives in the US)
• http://climateaudit.org (written by Steve McIntyre who resides in Canada)

In some quarters the second blog on the list has been confused with my own website – NOconsensus.org. Quite independently of each other, Jeff and I have both been riffing on the NOconsensus meme, but it is his blog that has had the misfortune to attract the attention of the US Justice Department.

What’s going one?

Is there a “climate change” exception to the First Amendment?

(I’d ask “Where are the founders when we need them?” but that would sound silly.)

Honestly, if it weren’t for Instapundit, who would keep us abreast?

(If I sound facetious, I plead the gallows humor defense.)

UPDATE: M. Simon has posted previously about this, but I think that what is happening is outrageous enough that it bears repeating. Especially if we consider the context. This is happening while the government mulls over a free speech kill switch, and an Obama-appointed judge in Oregon has ruled that bloggers do not deserve the same protections accorded journalists.
