It Must Produce Revenue

Eric is discussing my post Prevention Methods, and looks at the harms that making things illegal causes. A commenter chimes in with this bit of wisdom.

…many of these “illegal drug” like Marijuana can be produced without a good means of tax revenue – another reason to outlaw them

You can make quite a bit of your own booze (200 gal a year I believe) without paying any taxes (a permit may be required). I wonder if we should be making alcohol illegal to recover that lost revenue. Oh. Wait. If they make alcohol illegal there is zero revenue. Only enforcement costs. Barring the usual theft pardon me “asset forfeiture” by police of anything people own that they cannot account for. Like cash. This is sometimes referred to as highway robbery.

The 200 gallons per annum is strictly beer and/or wine. Distilled spirits are still legally off-limits to everyone without the proper Federal licenses and excise tax paperwork.

That said, an old pressure cooker, some 3/8″ soft copper coil and a couple of thermometers …

    When you’re right, you’re right.
When we moved to Tennessee (a dry state, or county,55 years ago)my father first found a realtor. His second call was to a bootlegger.

What Captain Ned said but that’s 100 gal of beer or wine per adult per household, up to 200 gallons maximum. So, if you live by yourself, it’s 100 gallons per year.

Some state laws are weird about it, too. In Alabama, you can’t make beer (legally) and any wine you make must be from Alabama-grown fruit or berries.

Oh yeah. Don’t be caught selling any of that homebrew!
