Dispatches From The Continuing War On Things That Work

I’m in the habit of doing things like melting butter in the microwave in my pyrex measuring cups.    Now I wonder if it’s safe after seeing this over at Instapundit  http://www.popsci.com/science/article/2011-03/gray-matter-cant-take-heat

And speaking of that, have there been any changes to hair dye?  I’m perfectly willing to admit that perhaps my hair is getting more dye resistent, but I’ve checked with friends who also dye their hair and the ordinary, cheap dye from the grocery store is now lasting a week, if that.  It just washes off.  I’ve had to switch to the Frederic Fekkai stuff…

Pyrex isn’t borosilicate anymore? That’s like finding out Kleenex is made from barbed wire. If you want the real stuff, you can get it from Europe (amazon.co.uk?) since it’s made in a different factory…

Quit dyeing. Embrace your NATURAL color.
Only half kidding. I gave up coloring my hair years ago – and it’s ever so much healthier (and a fairly attractive salt-and-red-brown-pepper) for my decision.
But, I wouldn’t be surprised if there were some changes (or many) due to this or that (only for our own good, of course) regulation.

The tip about Pyrex is old news. Savvy cooks learned that the new Pyrex is utter crap long ago. Pyrex is coded, and there are websites dedicated to helping shoppers interpret the codes to determine whether your dish is old Pyrex or new Pyrex. My wife has taken to buying her Pyrex in thrift shops; she gleefully paid $7 for a pie plate in an antique store in Seminole, Texas. “She (the shopkeeper) didn’t know what she had….” said my wife.
