Mocking Luther King

The critics missed the point of what Barack Obama plans to do tonight: he’s not placing himself as a god in a mock temple, but rather cynically exploiting the 45th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s famed I Have a Dream speech — with a mock Lincoln Memorial in a football field.
This is the scene he’s hoping to evoke:

No doubt the press will flood itself with revelatory prose on its success, according to script.
It’s all so manufactured, cold, and cheapening.
I hope that people do reflect on Dr. King’s dream, ignore the color of Barack Obama’s skin, and judge the candidates on the content of their character.
White guilt ignored, McCain is the better man.

Architecturally, the Lincoln Memorial (opened in 1922) is a faux Greek Temple — every bit as much as Berkeley’s Greek Theatre (opened 1903).
However, in light of the Dream connection, it’s probably racist AND homophobic to criticize it.
    I’ll have a drink.

What is most important to remember about Mr. King’s speech is that he was dreaming of the elevaqtion of others and not the elevation of himself.
