Greetings from Alaska

This is the first chance I’ve had to check in at all, and I don’t have time for much of a post, but I thought I’d try to share a picture.
In Ketchikan, Alaska yesterday I was lucky enough to see a bald eagle sitting on top of an abandoned ramshackle house. Whipping out my camera, I started shooting pictures as quickly as I could, because I thought it would be frightened away. As my luck had it, not only was it not frightened away, but it was soon joined by a mate — and they didn’t seem to mind my attention.

(I suspect they knew I had a blog, and the Fourth is just around the corner.)

    Take me away.
    Come on fly me away.
Take me up to the sky.
    Where eagle’s fly.
Eagle is removed from the threatened species list. Same day the McCain/Kennedy amnesty bill is killed – a second time!
Neal, remember that nat geo article with all the critters going extinct due to climate change?
The apex air predator of the Americas is flying strong.
    I feel vindicated again.

So that’s where you chose to vacation. Interesting. Have you checked out the zip gliders yet? They are strung from tree to tree just like in Costa Rica, so you can glide through the temperate rain forest like the Eagles you captured for us. Spots near Ketchikan and also Juneau – probably expensive though.
The tourist trap railway up from Skagway is worth the trip. Had a great uncle who traversed the pass on foot. Made his fortune in gold, returned to southern California, and invested it buying property on Signal Hill. His descendants are still living off the oil money.
    Please keep us informed.

    Papertiger,
Yes, the eagle is off the list.
Nice: It shows that a determined and focused effort can save a species from extinction.
But it doesn’t mean that a climate change won’t doom many other species.
