Keeping politics out of religion

Via John at Locusts and Honey, I learned of a plan by the United Methodist Church to divest itself of “stock in companies whose dealings with Israel facilitate the seizure of Palestinian land or the destruction of Palestinian homes.”
The target of course is the evil Caterpillar Inc., manufacturer of bulldozers which ran over anti-Israeli activist Rachel Corrie (currently the subject of what strikes me as a massively anti-Caterpillar beatification campaign).
I’m sorry to see signs that anti-Semitism is apparently alive and well in the Methodist as well as the Presbyterian churches. I know people will scream that this isn’t anti-Semitic (because Palestinians are Semites too, and the Methodists support them).
OK then. I think it’s anti-Jewish.
And anti-business.
At the risk of asking the obvious, has it occurred to the Methodist Church that there’s a war on, and Israel happens to be an American ally?
UPDATE: More on Rachel Corrie here (including a lovely picture).
MORE: Locusts and Honey’s John has reminded me that the vote only affects the 340,000 member Virginia Methodist Conference, not the entire Methodist Church (which I guess is a partial relief — if one surely to embolden the current Rachel Corrie tour).

Clarification: only the Virginia Conference is planning this action! Not the entire UMC.

Nice to know that, and thanks for the correction. I guess the Rahcel Corrie Martyr campaign needs to press on….

The money that they are talking about is likely to be the pastors’ pension fund. I’m sure that the pastors will be thrilled to learn that their financial security is being used for political ends.
It’s fascinating (but not surprising) how St. Pancake is popular with the Left. It inspires me to by Caterpillar stock.

Please do? I have a brother who is their network tech, and a stock rise can only help him and his family. 🙂

I’m against it. Communist and socialist infiltration into Christian churches has been going on for a very long time, and the Methodist churches have been particularly hard-hit with this Socialist Gospel.
Manning Johnson, a Negro and deep Christian who had seen Communism from the inside and then broke with it, testified before the House Committee on Un-American Activities:
“It is an axiom in Communist organization strategy that if an ifiltrated body has 1% Communist Party members and 9% Communist Party sympathizers, with well-rehearsed plans of action, they can effectively control the remaining 90% who think and act on an individual basis. In the large sections of the religious field, due to the ideological poison which has been filtered in by Communists and pro-Communists through seminaries, the backlog of sympathizers and mental prisoners of socialistic ideology is greater than the 10% necessary for effective control.”
Commenting on the support given by certain churches to the Communist nuclear freeze movement, William F. Buckley observed:
“There is something subversive in contemporary Christianity, something objectively on the side of slavery. Mr. Nietzsche, you are wanted at your office.”
    Profound.
