Benazir Bhutto dead

This is very bad news:

Pakistan opposition leader Benazir Bhutto has died after a suicide attack at a political rally.
She was shot in the chest and neck shortly after her speech in Rawalpindi, Pakistan.

Ms Bhutto was attacked as she got into her car and the gunman then blew himself up.

"At 6.16 p.m. she expired," said Wasif Ali Khan, a member of Bhutto's party at Rawalpindi General Hospital.

"She has been martyred," said party offical Rehman Malik.

The explosion went off just after Ms Bhutto left the rally in Rawalpindi, minutes after her speech to thousands of people.

Her supports have smashed windows at the entrance to the hospital where she was being treated, some calling "Dog, Musharraf, dog,".

It is the first major attack since President General Pervez Musharraf lifted emergency rule two weeks ago.

It not only does not bode well for democracy in Pakistan, but by highlighting the growing instability of a nuclear power, it's a reminder that isolationism -- whether of the Ron Paul, Pat Buchanan, or Dennis Kucinich varieties -- is not a great idea.

I hope cool heads prevail.

(There have to be cool heads over there, right?)

MORE: Al Qaeda is reportedly claiming credit for the assassination -- a claim U.S. intel officials are checking out.

AND MORE: Glenn Reynolds and Pajamas Media have roundups of reports and reactions.

While it's too early to predict, this could have very serious consequences.

I grew up in India. We saw too many of the crazy events in Pakistan up close. Nukes or no nukes, trust me, the US should NOT get involved.

Its a big enough mess without us, it is simply NOT in our national security interest to run Pakistan. If you are concerned about any renegade nukes, trust me, Pakistan's neighbors, especially India, are about a hundred times as worried.

We don't need to babysit every despotic nation on the planet - we need to get our soldiers out of that hellhole (they are heavily patrolling the border areas from Afghanistan)!

BTW, I'm a dyed-in-the-wool, red-blooded Republican.

BTW, the last time we interfered in that part of the world was during another 'unavoidable crisis' - i.e. the Soviets invading Afghanistan. Nobody in India could understand why the US started subsidizing Islamic terror, even if it was against the Russians.

In those days, the US supported the 1980's version of Musharraf - General Zia. Gen. Zia Islamicised the previously secular armed forces of Pakistan and created elements in the Army and Intelligence services that created the Taliban. We all know how that turned out.

Interesting tidbit: Gen. Zia had Bhutto's dad, Zulfikar Ali bhutto, hung.

First of all to call Pakistan a democracy is spotting it some serious credit. In its time as a nation not a single leader has left power through a voluntary democratic process. They stay in power until they are killed, detained or forced to resign in disgrace. Basically once somebody becomes the leader they are good until an enormous crisis.

More disturbing then that is the Pakistani Armys role in national affairs. It is commonly accepted in the army itself and through the country that the Army interveigning in the affairs of the state is perfectly acceptable. Plus also they have nukes.
