Shut up and die!
This woman would be safer (and better off) as an atheist. Instead, she has taken the time to read the Koran and study the hadiths, and make an impassioned plea for Muslim tolerance. For this (and for her self-described lesbianism) she has received death threats. Is freedom of speech incompatible with Islamic fundamentalism? (A lot of links follow, but they're all worth reading.) How about critical thinking? Here's Irshad Manji again, interviewed by MacLeans, on Israel: Q. In your book, you depict Israel as an example of what a modern Islamic state could look like. For a Muslim, that's pretty courageous. That kind of talk is heroism, by any standard. What I would like to know is why did I have to hear about this lesbian activist (described as host and producer of "Queer Television" -- "the world's first show on commercial television for gays") from an online conservative publication? Where are the major news media on this? Are they afraid of "Muslim sensibilities?" Only after I was clued in was I able to find such gems as this: Stuff like that, and this, or this, renew my faith. (The more mainstream blogosphere is starting to notice her too!) On the lighter side, maybe she can help this poor man. (I hope you can all manage to stream it, because it will make your day....) I may be wrong, but I don't think this courageous woman will get much support from either gay or Christian fundamentalist groups. The former are described as "conspicuously and hypocritically silent" and as to the latter, I could find nothing, so I think they are silent. (Whether such silence is hypocritical is another matter.) posted by Eric on 10.02.03 at 05:04 AM

Mine too! Can't wait for her book to come out. Eric Scheie · October 5, 2003 08:29 PM Eric, thank you for providing a basis of an argument that has been long brewing. Just so you know.... Irshad Manji likes to be refered to as a Muslim Lesbian Feminist Activist... with that titile I think she's a little confused. Let alone the fact that she has had NO exposure to the Isreal/Arab delima yet she seems to be able to criticize it very well. She lived in Vancouver most of her life, thus what she has expereinced is a westernised form of Islam. To be honest she doesn't seem to be very well versed, however seems to be eleqouently presenting her side. She has been covered in the media, if that is your concern. The reason is that there is a thirst for controversy, for someone to stir the pot, make a noise, and who better than the person that has always been viewed as a little controversial and outspoken and most of all already has media presence. Therefore, Eric Ms. Manji is not out there for her knowledge or wisdom rather the need for people to understand the dimensions which she presents rather poorly. Trust me if you had any inclining of what is fact and fiction you would base her writing on Fiction and very good fiction at that. Therefore before you go out and buy a book thinking she is "the next best thing" she isn't - she's in for a quick buck like everyone else. Plays the media the right way and BOOM Eric is talking about her... you and others of course ;-) So, if you would like a true perpective stay tuned... the CBC will have something for you soon.
