Dropping Boxes Of Ammo And Small Arms
I had been thinking of doing a piece on the small arms trade in Gaza when commenter mdmhvonpa nudged me along with this comment to Vengeance: Hatfields and McCoys ... swell. Perhaps we should just start dropping boxes of ammo and small arms into 'Palestine' to hurry this up.We have a better deal going than that. They are paying for the stuff. RAMALLAH - A loud siren wails in the main street of Ramallah as the ambulance races to the nearby hospital. The casualty inside the vehicle is a teenage Palestinian who received two bullets to his chest during clashes among rival armed militia. So what is the market like? "In the West Bank, the weapon pipeline is the Israeli gangs. They sell their weapons to Palestinian counterparts, who in return sell them to armed groups and private customers," the officer says.I did a little searching and found a Kalashnikov for $335. Considerably below the prices charged in Gaza. Good profit indeed. The Israelis must have trouble at those anti-smuggling meetings keeping a straight face while denouncing the smuggling. With prices pretty much standardized there has to be a lot of competition in the market. Figuring out how much it costs to keep the civil war going is pretty much a job for accountants. Muhammad is a young journalist working for a local radio station affiliated with Fatah. In recent weeks, he's gotten several death threats. It is my opinion that American and Israeli policy for the Palestinians is for the time being: civil war, instability, and tribalism. When they have had enough they will either leave or ask the Israelis to rule over them. Cross Posted at Power and Control posted by Simon on 02.08.07 at 02:11 PM

Sigvald, Thanks for the update. I'm a Navy guy and my knowledge of small arms is limited. Small arms qualification for me was pointing an M-1 down range and emptying the clip. No reprimand from the range safety officer = you qualified. Re-qual was firing a .45 off the fantail of my ship. If you only put holes in the water with your clip, you qualified. The price I pulled up was the first one that seemed reasonable i.e. not sniper quality. If the fear is high enough, any mismatch between supply and demand can drive the price very high. M. Simon · February 8, 2007 04:29 PM The price you found was a typical price for a semi automatic AK-47 clone. More expensive variants are usually rare items or partially US made. Someone over there is making a ton of cash. However, I imagine part of the price has to go to greasing the palms of a lot of people that help with smuggling those arms into the region. And with any luck the survivors will have decided to build a country instead of a shooting gallery. Anonymous · February 9, 2007 07:33 PM Post a comment

To be fair, the Kalashnikov you found isn't fully automatic, and I'm sure the ones in the PA territories are.
On the other hand, they're still way overpriced, since a used AK on the world market should be cheaper than US retail for a semi-auto.
Odd that the smugglers' markup is so high.
(And I wonder what the Chinese rifle is? Another AK clone?)
