Who Won In Lebanon?
Michael Totten has been doing some really excellent work in Israel and Lebanon showing the aftermath of the war and interviewing those who saw the war first hand. There is way more than I can cover in a few paragraphs so let me give you the short version. Michael thinks the Hizballah got the worst of it. His pictures confirm it. His pictures also show that the Israelis were very selective in their targeting and Hizballah was indiscriminate. Hizballah headquarters area in Beirut. You might consider me unusual, but I do not consider any who promote mass murder as worth any understanding of their position except as necessary for their total defeat. I'm especially not going to give a further thought to those who would opress women, go after homosexuals or consider it their religious duty to murder Jews. Perhaps I'm too liberal? So be it. M. Yes its true that hezbollah may have gotten the worst of it... but the fact of the matter is that groups like Hezbollah thrive on being beaten but not destroyed the bombing and fighting amoungst isreal and syria just strengthens the radical muslim recruiting base. The problem is that the people of this country end up rallying around an idea of nationalism and religionism pionered by the west and used as a rallying cry for those who veiw the western world specifically the US view as power being being all powerfull. It is important to note that the US generally believes themselves as "peacemaker" of the world. The problem of this view is that those in history including those popular in the western world such as the greeks and the roman empire only show that by being ignorant to those whom you are attempting to conquer you only undermine those who you believe you are better than. Understanding those who you view as your enemies should include more than understanding how to "defeat" them, rather it should include understanding them as humans and thus understanding there motives rather than labeling them as monsters.
