Straightening out gender confusion
There are altogether too many thoughts here for my backward and reactionary mind to process. While Steven Malcolm Anderson may have beaten me to this (or at least, deposited the idea in my mind), what I'm wondering right now is why I can't be a pre-post-operative female-to-male transsexual trapped in the body of a man, but who, because of pure luck, has no need to go through with the surgery, because I already have male anatomical features (i.e., a woman who wants to become a man but who is by accident of birth already trapped in the body of a man). It would be a terrible hardship (a cruel travesty, even) to make me surgically become a man trapped in the body of a woman who wants to become a man because the man is trapped in her body, if I can shortcircuit the entire process and merely accept the fact that I am already where I would be after surgery back and forth. I mean, if there can be such a thing as a "male lesbian," why stop there? If a woman can go from female to male (and can be called a man before the surgery) then why require the male lesbian (once s/he really reaches a deeper understanding of him/herself) to go through one surgery to become female and another to become male? Can't the process be an internal one? Well, who's to say it can't be? In my view, to say otherwise would constitute sex role tyranny. posted by Eric on 10.01.05 at 10:27 AM

If two is an arbitrary number of genders, then so is three, or even four; there are, I suspect, infinitely many combinations of preferences, orientations, presentations, and hardware provisions. I'm going out on a limb here and predicting that within not too many years, though probably beyond my lifetime, there will be technological and biological advances which make it possible to make the sexual apparatus, you should pardon the expression, hot-swappable; you'll be able to sample a wide variety of combinations with little or no risk to anything but your credit limit. When I first suggested something like this, an objection was raised: "Suppose your girlfriend comes home with a penis." My answer - "Then we'll find out if I have any clue about how to give a proper blowjob" - didn't satisfy the objector. CGHill · October 1, 2005 06:52 PM Welcome back, Steven! Steven Malcom Anderson's secret lesbian admirer · October 1, 2005 09:44 PM I think that my brain just cramped trying to keep that all straight...errrr, sorted out. bryan · October 1, 2005 10:46 PM (the whole issue gives me gender cramps.) Eric Scheie · October 2, 2005 09:36 AM Hmm... and here I thought I was the only one here that could get cramps of a sexual nature. argh. Let's see, as I understand it-- My chromosomes are XX and I fully physically express them. My gender is also female (I feel quite at home in my female physical structure.) My sexual orientation, along the sliding scale of 100% straight to 100% gay, is androcentric (I'm not "disgusted" by lesbianism, it just doesn't interest me). Rather than trapped by "sex role tyrants" I think we've been at the mercy of "sex role" inventors -- those, many for political reasons, who "discover" new and innovative ways to set people against each other. Darleen · October 2, 2005 02:08 PM I agree, Darleen. It's an issue older than this blog.... Eric Scheie · October 3, 2005 08:37 AM |

Dear Eric:
Thank you for the links! Yes, I am a gynosexual man, a Lesbian trapped in man's body if you will. Alas, I am neither man enough to be a man's man nor woman enough to be a Lesbian. I shall therefore accept my place in the hierarchy, contemplating holy Dawn and her holy Negro wife Norma (on the captive Conservative side) or wicked Wanda and her 69 women (on the libertine Liberal side).
Hierarchy! Ahhhh, hierarchy, order, degree -- that "ladder to all high designs"!, as great Shakespeare put it so well. "....Take but degree away, untune that string, and hark! what discord follows...." In between all my Romantic strivings, I have been Classically reposing, "basking in the shadows of great oaks" (Edmund Burke), listening to the Concert of Europe (1815-1848) conducted by Klemens von Metternich. Let us repose in a just peace under legitimate government, Catholic monarchy. Throne and Altar.... Hierarchy.... The eternal Divine order....
