Legalization In Illinois

Tall Dave reminds me that full cannabis legalization has passed in Illinois and is on the Governors desk for his signature. Given that he ran on the issue, his signature is a sure thing.

Growing your own is only legal for medical users. And the police will be kept busy protecting those with government authorization/licensees. You can read the whole bill here.

Still as Dave says “for now IL can celebrate a major victory for freedom, fiscal prudence, and common sense.”

Now about our “addiction problem.”

Addiction is a symptom of PTSD. Look it up.

They did also reduce <6 plants to a maximum $200 civil violation (this appears to be a municipal fine, so if I understand the law some areas may simply choose not to levy such fines). So growing enough to smoke will probably be quasi-legal for some, and less than a speeding ticket for others.

The original law was quite a bit more forward-thinking — it even allowed growers to have an unlimited number of plants <5 inches tall (so they could start a new cycle before the old finished without violating the law, saving a month or so). Hopefully that concept will be re-visited, laws should be pro-market not pro-business.
