Federal Pot Legalization Bill Introduced

About a month and a half ago I noted that some Senators planned to introduce a cannabis legalization measure with President Trump’s approval. I had predicted that it might take between a week and a couple of months to get introduced. Well it only took about 6 weeks (not exactly light speed) , but the bill has been introduced. You can read some of the reactions at the link.

Here are some details of the bill.

Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Cory Gardner (R-Colo.) introduced a bipartisan bill on Thursday that would allow states to regulate marijuana without federal interference.

Warren and Gardner, who both represent states with legal recreational pot, introduced the legislation, known as Strengthening the Tenth Amendment Through Entrusting States (STATES) Act, as a response to the Trump administration’s hard-line stance against the drug.

The bill would amend the Controlled Substances Act to include a framework that says it no longer applies to those following state, territory or tribal laws “relating to the manufacture, production, possession, distribution, dispensation, administration, or delivery of [marijuana].”

The Trump Administration may have a hard line stance against drugs (Jeff Sessions – I’m talking to you) but Trump hasn’t. Here is something he said almost 30 years ago.

In a speech delivered at the Miami Herald’s Company of the Year Awards luncheon, Donald Trump condemned the “war on drugs” as “a joke” and called for the legalization of drugs. “We’re losing badly the war on drugs,” he said. “You have to legalize drugs to win that war. You have to take the profit away from these drug czars.” So reported the Sarasota Herald-Tribune on April 14, 1990.

It looks like he is getting to carry out something he believes in. God speed Mr. President.

A companion bill has been introduced in the House. But I wouldn’t give it a big chance due to the obstruction of Pete Sessions. No relation to Jeff.

President Trump says he will probably sign the bill.

Under current federal law, the sale and use of marijuana is illegal in every jurisdiction in the country, state nullification not withstanding. If you think marijuana anywhere is illegal, then you must think slavery, school segregation, school prayer and the criminalization of abortion is legal. The new legislation will clarify the legal situation regarding some drugs, and it is needed to prevent criminal prosecution of marijuana users in states like Colorado.

  4. […] That sounds just like the bill Sen. Gardner (R-CO) has introduced and President Trump supports. […]
