Happy Memorial Day! Remember and honor those who died!

This famous poem is now over 100 years old:

Flanders Field today:

And a painting of the soldier poet’s subject:

So please remember.

Don’t let their sacrifices be in vain.

We will always be in their debt.

Thank you for that. (I’ll admit I simply cannot wish anyone a happy Memorial Day – it just doesn’t seem appropriate.)

That said, I agree we should celebrate our heroes. May they rest in peace and rise in glory.

Addendum. There was a reply to Flander’s Fields:
“Oh! You who sleep in Flanders’ Fields
    Sleep sweet – to rise anew;
We caught the torch you threw,
    And holding high we kept
The faith with those who died.

We cherish, too, the Poppy red
That grows on fields where valor led.
It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heroes never dies.
But lends a lustre to the red
On the flower that blooms above the dead
    In Flanders’ fields.

And now the torch and Poppy red
Wear in honour of our dead.
Fear not that ye have died for naught:
We’ve learned the lesson that ye taught
    In Flanders’ fields.”

I can only hope she is right.
