What Is Going On In Syria? – 2

This is early news and the analysis may be incorrect but it is not unexpected. The Russian/Syrian advance in Syria is meeting resistance. Russia ‘reducing air strikes against Syrian rebels’ as quick win proves elusive.

Russia is reducing its air strikes against Syrian insurgents, as the intervention fails to hand a swift advantage to pro-government forces.

Moscow’s daily strike rate peaked on Tuesday with warplanes flying 88 sorties against 86 targets. But in a statement on Wednesday, the Russian Defence Ministry said it would be reducing the frequency of strikes to support a stuttering regime offensive.

Reuters verifies the reduced air activity.

If you had been frequenting the sites with a lot of pro Russian commenters you would have thought that Russia was going to clean up the Middle East in six months tops. It may take them some longer.

Russia just doesn’t have the logistics to support a high tempo air war.

In other words, they have shot their wad but are trying to cover their limitations.

And on our side, we’re staying in Afghanistan for several more years.

Fools that we are – we should have conned the Russians into going back in there. They did SO well last time! As did the Brits…

“When you’re wounded and left on Afghanistan’s plains, and the women come out to cut up what remains, jest roll to your rifle and blow out your brains and go to your gawd like a soldier.”

What does Putin want from life, anyway? Is there a Russian grand strategy, or is he just flailing around, much like some other politicians I could name? Seems like they might really have two ultimate choices in Syria; either place Assad (or some other, compliant dictator) back in power in return for a permanent military presence in the area. Or Chechenyize the area, rubbleify everything in sight. Just bomb the place flat and let them rot. Tempting, but I don’t know what advantage they get from that. I expect Russian rulers to be at least sane, rational, and capable of understanding the best interests of their nation, or at least themselves and their cronies. Of course, I’ve also expected the same from our leaders, and look what we have. That is, I expect the actions of major players in world politics to be understandable, even if inimical to our own interests. Or have foreign relations in this era been reduced to cthonic irruptions from some dark venue of the collective unconscious?

Conspire with Iran to keep oil prices high? What good does Syria, a minor oil producer do? I don’t get it.

As Obama keeps Sunni Pakistan in check in Afghanistan, Iran closes in on Sunni Arabs from the south in Yemen and the Russians and Iranians from the north in Syria. In the meantime we accommodate by removing our carriers in the Gulf and standing down in Syria and Iraq. Remember, Obama invited Putin into Syria to dispose of chemical weapons, right?
After my election I’ll have more flexibility.

Airstrikes won’t win this war infantry and armor on the ground will. The Russians, Syrian Arab Republic army (That’s Assad) and allies are going to grind up ISIS all the way to the Turkish border then to the Iraqi border. The next two questions are where do all those ISIS supporters (who don’t get killed) run to and how many are already in Europe camouflaged as “refugees”?

Game over for the Saudis. Russia forms alliance with Jordan, with Obama’s blessing we can assume. I’m expecting Saudi oil fields, or pipe lines at least, to go up in flames before this is over. Russia depends on high oil and gas prices for its income and that should do it.
