Debt Free College

Democrat Martin O’Malley is promoting a Democrat plan for debt free college.

I have a better plan. Debt free education. All you need is determination and an internet connection. No Democrat plan for a government program required.

And you get lots of contract jobs. Good for some of us, but others really need to be employees.

We need to somehow change the HR departments’ standards first, Sisyphus.

When I was going to college junior college cost $20 dollars a semester and regular college $80 dollars a semester and I worked my way thru driving a garbage truck. ;but the republicans escaped out of the dumpster and took over the state and the country and said rich people need lower taxes more then you need affordable college education and the rest is history.

Democrats subsidized college. Prices went up.

And let’s not forget the increase in administrative overhead that’s occurred at so many colleges and universities, especially of the state variety and their role in driving up the costs. The last few decades has seen administrative positions multiply so quickly that in many systems there are as many administrators as faculty. And this occurred during times of either flat or decreasing student enrollments. Administrative bloat is a hallmark of government bureaucracies, and loved by all right thinking progressives.

There’s such a simple solution. We already provide a free, compulsory public school education (item 10 on the Communist Manifesto to do list). All we need to do is extend it to a free, compulsory college education. Property taxes already pay for grade through high school, so it shouldn’t be any problem at all to raise the extra funds to cover college. And I’m totally sure that each and every student will benefit from another 4 years of sitting at a desk. Even grad school for all! Judging by the relative costs per capita for public schools vs college we only need to increase property taxes by a factor of 4. Who could possibly object to such a simple and fair plan? After all, education benefits everyone.

    Assert Emily Litella Mode:

What’s the big brouhaha about free collage? All you need is a pot of glue and any old newspaper, magazine, whatever. Hardly costs anything at all, anyone can do it.

And another thing, why do the bodegas have little signs that say “envios a dinero”? So what they’re envious of my dinner, what I eat is my business, I don’t care what you eat, I mean, refried beans? What was wrong the first time you fried them? And don’t get me started on the moldy cracker stuff, crackermoldy, whatever, I mean, yuck, right?

If you are motivated to learn you don’t need college. If you are not motivated to learn you don’t need college.

Kathy – Obama has fixed it so that very few will have a job. The cost structures he has imposed on business have greatly encouraged the rise of independent contractors. I do not think that such a move was his intention.

I don’t think it was either – but I know a LOT of people who simply cannot deal without a “real job” – and none of them think of contracting as such.

Not sure how to change their minds. My feeble attempts have failed badly. Sigh. And most of them would not actually be good contractors – they want to check in, do what’s in their job description – competently, mind you, they aren’t layabouts, and go home.

They don’t want to advise anyone on anything, they most definitely do not want to troubleshoot or invent. They want to do their work and go home.

OTOH at some point I was just plain sick of sitting in a cubicle working for idiots. Paid well, but…

If I feel like working at 2 in the morning in my underwear while smoking a cigar nobody can say a word to me about it. I can commute to work by standing up and walking down the hall.
