Gott-Dammitt! Every time the GOP looks like they’re going to make some progress they start blathering about who you can and cannot rub your naughty parts against. That IS the problem with with Republicans, snatching (pun!) defeat from the jaws of victory.
I had a Republican tell me once that I should not be bothered by their obsessions because they are soooooooooo much better than Democrats. Idiot(s).
Socons have appointed themselves protectors of the culture and the final authority on all things concerning morality. They think it their duty to see that the state is empowered to punish those who stray from the paths of righteousness they’ve defined for us. The old adage of “Live and let live.” is a foreign concept to these moral authoritarians. And they wonder why they are so disliked outside of their echo chamber of self-righteousness.
Republicans are saddled with religious zealots as their most ardent supporters, and they have no political sense whatsoever. The only hope to redeem the Right in the near future is for libertarian leaning pols on the Right to achieve popular political successes, both legislatively and on election day. Leading with policies and reforms that can garner support from across the political spectrum lays the foundation for future political successes and winning and keeping a majority over the long haul. Socons do just the opposite, as they want to lead with the things they are upset about but have no broader political appeal, hardly a way to win support from moderates and disaffected Dems.

Libertarian-leaning Republicans HAVE been achieving popular political success. But libertarians only bitch louder that there are still icky socons who vote. Libertarians don’t want to win, they just want to feel self-righteous.
Which is why I predict disaster after 2016.
