Back When Unwed Motherhood Was A Social Disgrace

Yes. Our culture has fallen. Unwed motherhood is no longer a disgrace and abortion on demand is rather freely available. But there is worse. This link was suggested to me by commenter Frank. Brought to you by those paragons of morality the Catholic Church.

In a town in western Ireland, where castle ruins pepper green landscapes, there’s a six-foot stone wall that once surrounded a place called the Home. Between 1925 and 1961, thousands of “fallen women” and their “illegitimate” children passed through the Home, run by the Bon Secours nuns in Tuam.

Many of the women, after paying a penance of indentured servitude for their out-of-wedlock pregnancy, left the Home for work and lives in other parts of Ireland and beyond. Some of their children were not so fortunate.

More than five decades after the Home was closed and destroyed — where a housing development and children’s playground now stands — what happened to nearly 800 of those abandoned children has now emerged: Their bodies were piled into a massive septic tank sitting in the back of the structure and forgotten, with neither gravestones nor coffins.

Real septic tanks get pumped every few years. It is unlikely that this went unnoticed. And if the tank was purpose built…

But not to worry. The church is morally opposed to birth control and abortion at any stage of pregnancy and in favor of cannabis prohibition. Why cannabis prohibition? Well the high might lead the faithful astray. So even its use for medicine must be opposed.

Not being a paragon of anything (I’m a fairly good engineer) I have always been suspicious of the morally superior. There aren’t any. Just better and worse. I do try for better these days. But I have to admit that there were times that I WORKED for worse. I’m still paying on that debt.

The RCC may well be the most corrupt organization on the planet. It’s always been a political organization masquerading as a religious group. Ironically that’s just the opposite of modern Republicans who appear to be a religious organization masquerading as a political party.

I share the late Christopher Hitchens’ sentiment that religion ruins everything.

Back then they also lynched black men and women for being “upity” and shoot mexicans in the good old days!

Secretive, unaccountable institutions are capable of anything. Anything at all.
