Slave Meters

You will recall that yesterday I did a post Stop The Smart Grid. The video there got the first mate looking for more information and she found this video. I love it because they have an actual electrical geek discussing the issue.

Here is the article mentioned in the video: The Smart Grid as the Slave Grid.

If you go back to my article Stop The Smart Grid you will note (at the bottom) that I’m looking for capital that can help me patent an idea that will get 95% of the benefits of the Smart Grid for grid stability without the Big Brother (telescreens evverywhere?) aspects. If you know anyone that can help please pass the article on.

Smart Meters: Building the Global Surveillance Grid *You’re not ganna like this!. The style is a little over the top for my taste, but the information is good. Well except for the radiation scare part. You know. If I wanted to discredit the people fearing surveillance I would make the radio wave dangers a topic of discussion. If there are any – they are relatively slight. If you want to skip the intro go to about 2:30 in. Here is a text article on the subject of the video: CIA wants to spy on you through your appliances from the trade magazine Network World. I subscribe to Network World. Here is a bit I found of interest. (embedded links at Network World).

Web-connected gadgets will ‘transform’ the art of spying and the real kicker is that Americans will willingly bug their own homes. “CIA Director David Petraeus cannot wait to spy on you” through your smart appliances, according to Danger Room. Petraeus spoke about the coming “Internet of Things” at a summit for the CIA’s venture capital firm In-Q-Tel. “Items of interest will be located, identified, monitored, and remotely controlled through technologies such as radio-frequency identification, sensor networks, tiny embedded servers, and energy harvesters – all connected to the next-generation internet using abundant, low-cost, and high-power computing. The latter now going to cloud computing, in many areas greater and greater supercomputing, and, ultimately, heading to quantum computing.”

I don’t think they have your best interests at heart.

Homeowner Pulls Gun To Stop New Electric “Smart” Meter From Being Installed – 2 minute video

The Dark Side of ‘Smart’ Meters – about 33 minutes and technical. He is not exactly correct about saving energy. When you draw power when energy use is low power line losses decline. Not by a lot. But it makes a difference to the power companies which can make better use of base load generation which is more efficient. That will save significant amounts of energy. Note the use of RF Detectors at the beginning of the talk. Amazon has a whole host of RF Bug Detectors. The talk spends a LOT of time on the dangers of RF radiation. What he fails to mention is that with such low normal incidences of the cancers mentioned that coming to any kind of strong conclusion is difficult. I wouldn’t dismiss the dangers entirely. But I wouldn’t give them a lot of weight either. Statistics is a hard subject and the guy is obviously not well versed in it. Despite his credentials. There are bigger dangers by far. Like crossing the street while texting or talking on the phone. The big danger for me is the surveillance. Which he starts discussing at 24:30 in.

Smart Meter Opt Out Program – video 2 minutes. The sidebar looks like it has other good videos. And some crazy stuff. Like “Free Power”.

That is more than enough to get you started.

Update: 2243z 29 January 2014

It is the invasion of privacy. The speaker in the video is from Canada.

I looked into the cancer risk from cell phones a few years ago and concluded it’s another leftist panty-twist scare tactic. The bulk resistance of flesh is somewhere around 10 to 50 ohms/unit, so the radiation arriving at he impedance of free space, 377 ohms, mostly reflects. Then, the skin depth at 2.5 GHz is a fractional inch, so whatever is left is not penetrating very deeply. It’s not getting in, so how can it having any effect? Same for radiation from schmart grid.

    MMM,

There seems to be a lot of electronics going around the blog the last few days.

    See Eric’s http://classicalvalues.com/2014/01/principled-with-few-strong-convictions/

BTW very nice explanation from first principles.
