Can An Abortion Ban Work?

Can an abortion ban work?

At an open-air flea market outside McAllen, Texas, Mexican-sourced Cytotec, which is commonly used for treating stomach ulcers, is available for sale, according to a July report by Bloomberg. WebMD cautions that the drug, generically known as misoprostol, “may cause abortion, premature birth, or birth defects.” That “side effect” is exactly what purchasers at the flea market have in mind.

“You’d be amazed at how many people, young people, are taking those pills,” Erlinda Dasquez, who says she has used the drug herself, told Bloomberg. “I probably know 12 to 20 people who have done this. My cousin just went to the flea market a few months ago.”

Bans will need to be policed.

Law enforcement excesses grab an ever-growing share of headlines. Doors kicked in, people killed, dogs shot, phone lines tapped, curfews imposed—they’re all examples of official overreaching at that unpleasant intersection of private activity and state disapproval. For some people, the implication of such abuses is that more scrutiny and the right people in charge will make law enforcement an enterprise which people need not fear.

But what if that’s not the case? It may be that lawmakers have assigned law-enforcers goals so frustratingly elusive that even angels couldn’t resist the temptation to escalate tactics to insane extremes, trampling liberty and decency along the way.

Deranged escalation resulted in the misguided marijuana raid on the home of Berwyn Heights, Maryland, Mayor Cheye Calvo, during which his dogs were killed. When even a government official like Calvo can’t protect his pets from police overstepping, you know we’ve gone over a cliff.

There is always the anal probe for non-compliance or non-violation. PRN.

Don’t think it would be an ANAL probe for checking on abortion. Grrr…

I doubt if they could be that popular. I suspect that the people who insist their local pharmacies must be forced to carry abortifacients are looking for permission from someone in a white coat. A flea market won’t do that.

BTW, how do we know this isn’t propaganda from Republican activists trying to ensure that pro-life Tea Partiers don’t defect to the Libertarians?

    Joseph,

Prohibitions have a sorry and Progressive record. And yet Republicans have adopted some Prohibitions.

We now have a trans fat prohibition in the works. Will meat be next?

Republicans will have no moral leg to stand on. Because they are all for prohibitions based on “health” reasons.
