Heil Schieffer?

Bob Scheiffer is a devious old lefty who hides behind a carefully contrived Middle America ethos, and I have never trusted him. However, his latest remark comparing Americans who want to preserve their constitutional rights with Osama bin Laden and with Nazis is simply too much for me to stomach:

what happened in Newtown was probably the worst day in this country’s history since 9/11. We found Osama bin Laden. We tracked him down. We changed the way that we dealt with that problem. Surely, finding Osama bin Laden; surely, passing civil rights legislation, as Lyndon Johnson was able to do; and before that, surely, defeating the Nazis, was a much more formidable task than taking on the gun lobby.

To call the above remark despicable would be understatement. Perhaps the man has finally jumped the shark in his old age. Then again, perhaps he is merely showing his true colors. In any event, his Nazi comparison is misplaced. First off, the Nazis loved gun control.

And since everyone is invoking “the children” and applauding their calculated misuse as political props, why hasn’t  Bob Schieffer or any of his minions pointed out the Fuhrer himself also used children as political props? So did Saddam Hussein. Surely newsman Schieffer is old enough to remember these images (which were juxtaposed when Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait):

Ya, ze fuhrer luffed babiess!

As if whether Hitler loved babies means a damn thing, even if it were true (which it absolutely was not).

The point is, imagine if some right wing crank attempted to apply Schieffer’s “logic” to the “for the children” meme, and then invoked this equally ludicrous (equally Schiefferian) comparison:

We found Saddam Hussein. We tracked him down. We changed the way that we dealt with that problem. Surely, finding Saddam Hussein; surely, passing civil rights legislation, as Lyndon Johnson was able to do; and before that, surely, defeating the Nazis, was a much more formidable task than taking on the gun grabbers.

Such a statement would of course be called irresponsible (and evil) by guys like Schieffer, but they think it’s perfectly appropriate for them to do the same thing.

I’m not comparing anyone to the Nazis, mind you; I’m just trying to ridicule Schieffer.

Besides, I’m sure the man loves children.

That does not make him a Nazi, OK?

I bet Schieffer loves children so much he can’t stand to see them thinking they can handle their own affairs when they’re all grown up.

    Test, this is a test.

Could it be that journalists tend to be mis-diagnosed aspies?
