Feeding The Beast

Doug Hagmann has a column up called The alligator at our door where he discusses how we got into the mess we are in. While discussing the situation with a friend, the friend says:

He shook his head and looked at the ground, his voice trailing off to nearly a whisper. “The federal government is funding abortions, contraception, foreign wars, and money is lining the pockets of the federal banks and bankers, to pay off a fake and unsustainable debt. Don’t Americans understand they’re feeding the beast with every tax dollar they voluntarily pay? What about the Christians in America?”

Yeah, what about the “Christians” in America? So I wrote him a little “love” letter:

Yes. I see the problem. But abortion and contraception are not it. Abortion is (mostly) Democrats killing their own. If things are life and death (they are) we should let them.

I no more want Vagina police than I want Drug police. And the danger is: once government gains authority over vaginas it is a simple matter to change from “no abortion” to “mandatory abortion” when an evil Democrat gains office.

Social conservatives are as much to blame for our current mess as the Democrats. They are enablers. The prototype for the TSA was the DEA. And yet there is no Drug Prohibition Amendment.

I do a fair amount of political blogging and I can’t tell you the number of socons who STILL favor Drug Prohibition. It is not just those feeding the beast. It is also those who WANT a big beast to sic on their neighbors. Not thinking about what the beast will do when it runs out of neighbors.

Where abortions are legal do Democrats *really* have more abortions than Republicans?

There is a huge assumption here that people really believe what they claim to believe and have strength in their convictions. My experience has been that most people abandon their stated convictions as soon as they are the ones that have to pay the price for them (though they don’t usually do so publicly).

Yes. Democrats have more abortions that Republicans here is why:

    A thermodynamic explanation of politics

Sorry, Simon, that’s still in the realm of conjecture.

It may be plausible, but until an actual observation is made that shows one way or the other I reserve the right to be skeptical of it.

    Daniel,

Ever hear of Google? You can look it up.

I assumed that since you said “Abortion is (mostly) Democrats killing their own. If things are life and death (they are) we should let them.” that you might have already done so.

No point repeating the search if you had a link handy.

Has some numbers, but nothing about religious or political affiliation in those.

Of course if women are overwhelingly voting Democratic, and only women can have abortions, then I suppose the logic kind of holds.

A reasonable set of search criteria turned up the Prochoice.org page, an obviously biased source, but one that at least provides *some* statistics on religious affiliation.

Gender and race demographics seem to indicate a Democratic leaning, income demographics indicate a Republican leaning, and the bias towards urban dwellers is probably based on that being where the most people are. (88% urban, where about 90% of the population as a whole is urban).

It would be nice if someone else had bothered to actually look at this with some rigor, and nobody seems to have actually asked the question in a formal manner that I can find.

The ten states with the highest rates of abortion are all left-wing states.

Is that rate by % of pregnancies, or is it rate by absolute number?

Also, by what margin, and where are you finding these statistics?

Simon, do you believe all drugs should be legal?

    Resist,

They are all freely available and distributed by criminals. Legalization is but a very small step. And in Portugal it cut use in half.

As a Republican I believe that if doing nothing improves results then nothing should be done. I favor small government.

Prohibition is a vector for the spread of drug use. It is why “Conservative” Republicans favor it.
