    filbert,

The current Republican Party is the result of the Progressive split and not a continuation of Conservative (libertarian) thought from 1900.

Ever notice how they mouth “small government” and never implement it? The “small government” mantra is a vestige of the 1900 Conservative thought. It does not fit in well with the authoritarianism of the Progressives.

Also note how they foam at the mouth hate the libertarians. Of course we on the libertarian side are not much better. How could we be? We are anti-authoritarian.

What does the current Republican Party have to recommend it? They can do the math. The Democrats cannot.

The Republicans are also not nihilists.

And a personal favorite of mine although of tertiary political importance – they love Israel.

Oh, I understand (and basically agree) with your premise . . . I was just wondering what in particular caused this particular – – er – – eruption of yours.

I basically abandoned “Free Republic” some time ago because the ignorant/strident Christianists (as opposed to actual, observant Christians) doggedly insisted on considering “libertarian” and “libertine” as synonyms.

I have, much to my regret, come to the conclusion that Republicans are merely ignorant, while Democrats are actively maliciously evil. I realize this is something of an inversion of the Received Wisdom of current mass media culture.

But I can not ignore the reality of what people actually do on a daily basis, vs. what they claim to believe.

If Christian-Democrat Republicans would actually return to the values they claim they hold, then they could perhaps be redeemed.

But actual Socialist-Democrats have no values (except the worship of raw power and privilege) to which they can return. They are simply lost to civilization. Their redemption lies only in their rejection of everything that they believe.

This will not happen quickly, easily, or, I fear, peacefully.

    Filbert,

Your question caused me to do another post on the matter.

I think if we start calling the “lost” Republicans “Christian Democrats” we can heighten the contradictions.

And your view is mine. Christians have lost their way. It is of course heretical for an outsider to call them to Jesus. But that is what I intend to do.

What caused the eruption? A comment I made at Ulsterman where the Christian Democrat idea came into being.
