McCain was his opponent in 2008. In other years, he got people kicked off the ballot, or he had the good fortune run against Keyes.
Actually the Keyes debacle was because Jack Ryan’s sealed divorce records were opened and Dave Syverson (my State Sen.) mooted Keyes (instead of #2 Oberweiss) as his replacement.

Simon: Umm. No. Keyes was because of Keyes’ opinions. I’d (even now) vote for Obama in preference. Sorry.
As for the actual Presidential election – physics geek got it right. McCain was a “bend over and take it vote”. For both the left- and right-tending Republicans. (Albeit for different reasons). But he never inspired anyone – not the ‘base’, not the independents, and not really even the loyal all-the-way-down-the-ballot Replicans.
Romney isn’t much better – but at least he’s a bulldog. Which gets a lot of us more interested… (hey, it’s a start)
