And Blow Their Minds

Well it blew my mind and I’m from Omaha. (First one to get the reference right in the comments wins the prize of being the first to get the reference right in the comments). Oh. Yeah. Where was I? According to The Weed Blog the above image is going up on a billboard in Colorado.

In a March interview in The New York Times, conservative evangelist Pat Robertson said he “absolutely” supports the initiative on the ballot in Colorado that would regulate marijuana like alcohol.

“I really believe we should treat marijuana the way we treat beverage alcohol,” Robertson said. “If people can go into a liquor store and buy a bottle of alcohol and drink it at home legally, then why do we say that the use of this other substance is somehow criminal?”

Today, we’re proud to announce the unveiling of a new billboard in Grand Junction highlighting Robertson’s endorsement of the initiative. We hope you’ll take a moment to check it out — then share it with friends and family.

As a widely recognized conservative and evangelical leader, Robertson’s endorsement is especially powerful.

Many people are familiar with Pat Robertson and appreciate his opinions. In this case, his opinion is that it makes absolutely no sense to allow adults to use alcohol, yet punish them for using marijuana. Robertson has also decried the massive amount of money wasted on arresting, prosecuting and imprisoning people for marijuana-related offenses. We hope folks will take this opinion into consideration as they cast their votes on Amendment 64 this November.

This is a huge endorsement and will no doubt sway more than a few Christian Conservatives to back a measure already supported by 61% of the Colorado electorate. Since support for these measures typically falls off by 5% to 9% by election day Colorado looks to be the first state in the nation to legalize marijuana. That would leave it up to the Feds and troglodyte local police to enforce the Federal prohibition. It would be the beginning of the end for marijuana prohibition. Because that is in part how alcohol prohibition died.

Hopefully other religious types will come to the same conclusions as Pat has. Sadly, it’s taken memebers of the religious community a long time to finally recognize the problems with drug prohibition. I guess that shouldn’t be surprising in that the religious community has been championing this immorallity since the beginning.

For us religious types, it’s extremely difficult to quash the urge to legislate what other people should or should not being doing.

    John S.,

You might wish to tell your brothers that such an urge is a direct indication of a weak faith. Which is to say Jesus evidenced no such urges. Just the opposite. His interventions were direct and personal. He didn’t legislate. He ministered. Personally.

Let us pray (and, for once, I’m not being sarcastic…).

For us religious types… it is extremely difficult to [tolerate] the urge to legislate what other people should or should not being doing.

The essence of religious practice, in Western terms, can be summed-up as “Do not do unto others that which one would not be done unto himself” and “do unto others only that which…”

My reading of history tells me that the “Progressives” (Or as I call them, the passive aggressive assive progressives) in the early 20th century finally got to the Christians who had been resisting outright prohibition during the 19th century. They finally capitulated to the communists and agreed to annihilate Christian Liberty. They/(we) have never yet recovered, and that’s why we have a drug war without even a drug amendment to the Constitution, for crying out loud!! But if Christians begin to read their Bible’s again, they may yet learn the limits of The Law.
