What we need is less more salt!

A couple of years ago I asked my doctor what he thought about salt. He said I didn’t need to worry about it, as I have never had a blood pressure problem, and it poses little or no risk for me. However, he warned me that there was a lot of medical opposition to salt by his colleagues in the “anti-salt community” — which he said was the equivalent of religion. Religious medicine? Can such things be? And even if there was such a thing as Bible-based medicine, salt would seem to have very little to do with it. In fact, at the time the Bible was written, salt was a highly valuable commodity. The word “salary” comes directly from the Roman “salarium” and every Roman soldier was issues his ration of salt. In fact, there’s even an expression, “He’s worth his salt.”

Anyway, I was amused to see that even the lefty New York Times is taking a second look at anti-salt hysteria, in light of emerging evidence that salt is actually so good for most people that if they cut it out they’d be harming themselves:

While, back then, the evidence merely failed to demonstrate that salt was harmful, the evidence from studies published over the past two years actually suggests that restricting how much salt we eat can increase our likelihood of dying prematurely. Put simply, the possibility has been raised that if we were to eat as little salt as the U.S.D.A. and the C.D.C. recommend, we’d be harming rather than helping ourselves.

Typical. One year it’s dangerous, the next year it’s good for you.

What these “scientists” say should always be taken with a grain of salt.

So that’s my throwaway post for this afternoon. So please continue on and read Sarah’s post about giving back.

Unlike yours truly, she has really earned her salt.

I’ve had to give people moving to tropical (where I lived for a while) and sub-tropical (where I live now) areas little lectures on the necessity of eating salt if you are going to be out in the heat of the day for anything more than door to car to door (and on bad days, even then).

Sigh. Heat stroke is nothing to mess with. No salt? Increases the probability a LOT.
