About six minutes into this rather slow song, the aging Jerry Garcia (who had had innumerable meltdowns and about a year to live) finally manages to persuade himself to open up, and he plays his guitar poignantly and will soulful brilliance. Just another of many such nights, but he made it count. The oddest thing is that he makes it look easy (which it obviously was not).

When I was going to concerts back in that era I looked a bit like Jerry – beard, long hair turning white, glasses.
I used to get a lot of “Jerry!” walking around a venue. Just mentioned that to the first mate. She remembers. And is still amused.
