Just What I Have Been Saying

I like it when other people notice the things I notice and write about them. Take this bit from The Economist.

…the Republican Party has long been quite comfortable living with the hypocrisy of promoting individual freedom in the economic realm, while strictly limiting it elsewhere. This is exemplified by Republican support for instrusive anti-terrorism measures, harsh anti-drug laws, restrictions on flag burning, and opposition to things like gay rights, abortion and euthanasia. Ron Paul is a pariah in the Republican Party in part because he falls on the “wrong” side of most of these issues. His supporters are not typical of the voters who deliver Republicans to the White House. It is telling that some have claimed Mr Paul is not even a real Republican…

You know, it is quite possible that I’m not a real Republican either.

I take exception to the mention of abortion – which has to do with individual rights for the unborn child – and euthanasia – which has to do with individual rights for the elderly (not sure why that one is included in this list anyway). But a thousand times yes for the rest of the list and pointing out that whether or not you like Paul, he is actually the more consistent one!

Okay, you like your weed, we get it. But isn’t it possible that there are issues more important than your weed? Like keeping the country from going bankrupt, or reining in Democrat power grabs at every other aspect of your life?

Maybe the government can start issuing weed so you’ll stay stoned and do what you’re told.

Why do you think there is so much displeasure with the nominees? The party is convulsing right now.

When is the last time the Republicans actually delivered some economic freedom?

The Democratic Party is basically the opposite – social freedom / economic control – except that the never seem to deliver the social freedom.

Funny how Ron Paul puts them both on the defensive since neither can deliver on their core issues.

Isn’t euthanasia the right to be slaughtered like a pig because you’re a waste of resources?

Well the country is squandering about $70 bn a year at all levels chasing the weed. Or as the police like to say: Herding Junkies.

And then there are the lives wasted by criminal records.

I dunno. You want my support? Do something to end prohibition. Because you know, I’m a wrecker. I’d just as soon see the country go down over this.

I don’t particularly care anymore about politics. I intend to wind up roses no matter who wins. I will work with the victors.

Bram has it down. Both parties have liberty slogans and totalitarian intentions. And Ron Paul is nailing it.

If there are issues more important than “weed” and you want the support of those who think “weed” reform is needed, perhaps you should give up your war on weed and its users so we can all focus on the important fiscal issues. There, that wasn’t so hard now, was it?

Maybe the government can start issuing weed so you’ll stay stoned and do what you’re told.

And maybe you are not an asshole. But I would doubt that.

Sober or otherwise I have never done what I am told unless I was in agreement with the proposed action.
