Government takeover of what should be the peoples responsibility, (subsidies to unsustainable causes, education, pensions, health care) has been the driving force for increased deficits.
How can the government which is dependent on the people
justify rendering the people dependent on the government?
Paying day to day expense with borrowed money can only result in bankruptcy.
