Happy Memorial Day

I have been too busy to blog these last few days, but today is Memorial Day, which is a day of remembrance, so I thought a few links would be in order.

Glenn Reynolds linked a really, really great post by Walter Russell Mead about how to remember those who fell in the Iraq War, and a very poignant post about the Civil War. (Remembering the Civil War dead was what began the tradition, of course.)

You might also check out Michelle Malkin’s Memorial Day post. Video poetry, and more. I especially liked these quotes:

“Others have died for my freedom, now this is my mark.” – Cpl. Jeffrey B. Starr.

“He knew what he was fighting for.” – father of Lt. Michael P. Murphy.

“He felt that what we were doing was just and right.” – Charles Cummings, father of fallen hero Army PFC Branden Cummings, who died in an IED attack in Diyala, Iraq.

“I genuinely believe the United States Army is a force of good in this world.” – 2LT Mark Daily.

And here are some modern Memorial Day accounts.

So, while most people see it as a day off for barbecuing and partying, it’s important to remember why.

Have a happy Memorial Day, and remember the fallen.
